As winter sets in, cooking gas crisis worsens in Kashmir

As winter sets in and people shiver in the sub-zero temperature, Kashmir is facing acute shortage of cooking gas. The crisis, triggered by Indian government's decision to restrict the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to six per year on authorised connection has affected the middle class most. According to official figures, Kashmir has almost one million LPG consumers.

People say that rigorous verification process for procuring LPG connections results in unnecessary hardships. Large queues of people outside the gas outlets have become a common sight in Kashmir these days. 

Abulhassan has been waiting since morning to get his gas connection verified. He says oil companies and the government are taking people for a ride. 

Members of civil society, political parties, and trade unionists have been strongly protesting against the cap on subsidized LPG cylinders. The crisis has already resulted in one casualty. A 63-year man died of cardiac arrest two days back while waiting for his turn to get his gas connection verified. 

The energy analysts opine that Kashmir being a cold high altitude region needs more cooking gas supply to meet the demands. 

Sensing the gravity of the situation, the state government says it is treating the matter as a top priority. 

The crisis is likely to escalate further when the only road connectivity to the region gets blocked due to snowfall, and the essential supplies to this region get choked. 

The local political leaders have sounded the alarm bells, warning New Delhi that the LPG crisis may fuel another spell of unrest in Kashmir, which is witnessing uneasy calm these days.

Kashmir’s meadow narrates tale of death, destruction

Kashmir is bestowed with breathtaking locales and enchanting meadows.

Every meadow has a fascinating story to tell, but there is one meadow in central Kashmir’s Budgam area, which has not been as popular for its beauty, as for its dubious reputation of being a killer-field. 

Located at an altitude of 14,000 feet and spread over a sprawling area of more than 8 square kilometers, the alpine meadow of Tosa Maidan is one of the biggest meadows in this Himalayan region. 

In the year 1962, the state government leased out a portion of this meadow to security forces, who have been conducting artillery drills in the area for the past five decades, posing a serious threat to the lives and property. 

In the summer, the meadow turns into a firing range for airforce and military and resonates with gunfire and explosions for six long months - day in and day out. 

The residents of nearby hamlets say that more than 500 people have died and scores have been rendered permanently disabled after coming in contact with the live, unexploded shells.

Being kashmir’s biggest green pasture, the residents of nearby villages come here for livestock grazing and for fetching firewood. 

Bilal Ahmed was 12 when he stepped on an unexploded shell and it blew off his leg. He says no action was taken by the authorities on the FIR lodged by him against the security forces. Now 28, Bilal runs a tailor shop to earn his livelihood. 

Bilal strongly opposes the military drills conducted by the army in the area, and says the place should be developed as a tourist spot to save the lives of people. 

In 1993, three children of a family were killed when they were fiddling with a live shell and it went off, blowing all of them into pieces. 

Nazir says that the firing range poses a risk to their lives and livestock. 

Nazir and many other locals who have been at the receiving end are now wary of venturing in that area, as the specter of fear looms large. 

As the 50-year-old lease between the federal government in Kashmir and security forces expires in December this year, there is a growing clamour from people against the lease extension to ensure the safety of their lives and to bring an end to years of violence and mayhem.

Kashmir Lolab area home to mass graves

Three and a half hour drive through alpine forests, autumn meadows, beautiful orchards, overlooking snow-capped mountains, leads us to one of the most exotic places in Indian-controlled Kashmir - Lolab.

However, there is an ugly truth hidden few feet under the earth beneath. The horrible story of one of the world’s longstanding conflicts. 

Situated close to the ceasefire line between India and Pakistan, Lolab has a graveyard where scores of unidentified bodies lie buried. Most of the graves remain unmarked. Interestingly, there are many graves with tin plates erected on them, giving numbers and details of identification of the dead buried inside. 

The graveyard hogged the headlines in 2010 when three youth who were dubbed as militants and killed near the ceasefire line and buried in this graveyard, were identified by their relatives after their pictures appeared in the press. The bodies were later exhumed. 

According to the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir, there are more than 60000 graves dotting the Kashmir landscape and every grave has a story - a tragic story - to tell. 

In 2011, state-run human rights commission confirmed the presence of scores of unmarked mass graves across 55 villages of north Kashmir, carrying over 2000 unidentified bodies. 

The authorities claimed that the graves carry the bodies of foreign militants killed in counter unrest operations. However, the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice (PTHRJ), in its report, rebuffed the government version and said the graveyards investigated carried mostly the bodies of those mowed down in fake encounters between 1990 and 2009. 

Despite incessant pleas by the commission, the government authorities in Kashmir turned down the demand for wide-scale DNA testing of bodies in these unmarked graves. 

With alleged government indifference, critics say the human rights violations continue unabated in this disputed Himalayan region and the people are now demanding their right to self determination and independence from India.

Kashmiri ulemas urge Muslims to boycott US, Israeli products

SRINAGAR, Sep 17: Enraged by anti-Islam American film, Jammu and Kashmir Muttahida Ulama-e Ahl-e Sunnat wal-Jamaat (MUASWJ), an amalgam of 42 religious bodies in Indian administered Kashmir, has urged Muslim world to boycott Israeli and American products “to give a befitting reply to the USA and its allies”.

“Muslims can never tolerate any disrespect shown towards our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It (making of anti-Islam film) has hurt the religious sentiments of entire Muslim community and has enraged the Muslims world.

American goods should be boycotted worldwide to give them a befitting reply. I urge the Muslim world not to buy Israeli or American products,” patron of the amalgam told media persons at a press conference in Srinagar, the capital city of Kashmir, on Sunday. “We will also consult the OIC and persuade it to enforce the boycott.”

He said that a delegation of the amalgam will soon visit the embassies of Muslim nations in New Delhi and will meet the envoys.

“We will try to take their governments into confidence regarding the proposal,” he said.

The MUASWJ also appealed to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to convene a special session to condemn the act.

“OIC must convene a special session to condemn this act and to reign in anti-Muslim forces so that such blasphemous acts are not repeated in future. Efforts should be made to stop the vicious propaganda against Islam, Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” MUASWJ patron added.

Castigating the Israel-born American film maker for hurting the religious sentiments of people in the garb of freedom of expression, the MUASWJ patron said that no law in the world allows anyone to hurt the religious sentiments of people.

Pertinently, MUASWJ has given a strike call for Wednesday (September 18) to protest against the blasphemous film.

Grand Mufti of Kashmir, Mufti Bashir-ud-Din, has already issued a decree against US nationals to leave the Kashmir valley forthwith.

Ever since the US-made anti-Islam footage appeared online, massive protests have been going on in this volatile and conflict-ridden region, bordering India, Pakistan and China.

All the political parties, cutting across ideological divide, have condemned the derogatory film.
The Kashmir government has also strongly denounced the blasphemous film, saying "such acts are aimed at causing discord among the people of different faiths".

According to reports, YouTube has restricted access to the anti-Islam film in India.

“We have blocked access to the YouTube page in the Indian domain,” a Google executive told a news agency on condition of anonymity. 

'حج اتحاد اور وحدت مسلمین کا مظہر ہے'

شاہی امام مسجد فتحپوری دہلی ڈاکٹر مفتی مکرم احمد نے کہا ہے کہ مسلمانوں کو سمجھنا چاہئے کہ چھوٹی چھوٹی باتوں میں اختلاف کرنے سے ملت کمزور ہوتی ہے اور اللہ بھی ناراض ہوتا ہے۔ لہٰذا ہمیں اخلاص کے ساتھ ایک دوسرے سے مل کر اور اپنے آپ سے اختلافات کو دور کر کے امت کو مضبوط کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔

تقریب نیوز (تنا): نئی دہلی میں منعقد دو روزہ بین الاقوامی حج کانفرنس کے سائڈ لائن پر تقریب خبر رساں ادارے (تنا) سے گفتگو کرتے ہوئے شاہی امام مسجد فتحپوری دہلی ڈاکٹر مفتی مکرم احمد نے کہا: خانہ فرہنگ اسلامی جمہوریہ ایران اور دہلی اسٹیٹ حج کمیٹی کے اشتراک سے بین الاقوامی حج سیمینار کا انعقاد ایک خوش آیند قدم ہے۔ لوگوں کو معلومات ہونی چاہئے کہ حج کا اصل مقصد کیا ہے، حج کا فائدہ کیا ہے، اللہ تعالیٰ کی مرضی کیا ہے، قرآن شریف میں اور احادیث شریف میں حج سے متعلق کیا حکم ہے۔ اس کو عام کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ لوگ حج کو جاتے تو ہیں لیکن اُس کا پورا مقصد نہیں سمجھ پاتے۔ حج کے بنیادی مقصد کو عوام تک پہنچانے کیلئے اور لوگوں کے اندر بیداری پیدا کرنے کیلئے ایسے اجتماعات اور ایسی کانفرنسیں بہت فائدہ مند ثابت ہوسکتی ہیں۔ 

انہوں نے کہا کہ حج اتحاد اور وحدت مسلمین کا مظہر ہے اور مسلمانوں کو چاہئے حج عبادت سمجھ کر کریں نہ کہ ایک تجارتی سفر کے طور پر۔ 

ڈاکٹر مفتی مکرم احمد نے مزید کہا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول (ص) کی رضا کیلئے اگر ہم حج کرتے ہیں تو اس کے بہت فائدے ہیں۔ ہمیں عبادت کو عبادت سمجھ کے کرنا چاہئیے۔ حج کا ایک مقصد یہ بھی ہے کہ ہم ایک دوسرے سے ملاقات کرکے اتحاد، اخلاص اور محبت کا ثبوت دیں۔ اس مقصد کے ساتھ اگر ہم حج کریں گے تو اس کا فائدہ ہی الگ ہوگا۔ 

اتحاد بین المسلمین کی ضرورت پر زور دیتے ہوئے شاہی امام مسجد فتحپوری دہلی نے کہا: ہر عبادت کے اندر چاہے وہ نماز پنجگانہ، نماز جمعہ ہو،ماہ مبارک رمضان ہو، یا حج ہو، اتحاد کی بہت زیادہ ضرورت ہے۔ ہمیں اس حقیقت کو سمجھنا چاہئے کہ چھوٹی چھوٹی باتوں میں اختلاف کرنے سے ملت کمزور ہوتی ہے اور اللہ بھی ناراض ہوتا ہے۔ لہٰذا ہمیں اخلاص کے ساتھ ایک دوسرے سے مل کر اور اپنے آپ سے اختلافات کو دور کر کے امت کو مضبوط کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ ہر ایک کے سکھ دُکھ میں شریک ہوکر ہی ہم کامیاب ہوسکتے ہیں۔

مسلمان بلا لحاظ فرقہ و مسلک متحد ہوکر اسلام دشمن قوتوں کا مقابلہ کریں

ہندوستان کے ممتاز عالم دین اور لکھنو شھر کے امام جمعہ مولانا سید کلب جواد نقوی نے کہا ہے کہ اسلام دشمن قوتوں نے مسلمانوں کے خلاف "Divide and Annihilate" یعنی لڑاؤ اور ختم کرو کی فارمولہ اپنائی ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ افسوس اس بات کا ہے کہ اس مقصد کے حصول کے لئے خود مسلمان ان کا ساتھ دے رہے ہیں۔

تقریب خبررساں ادارے کے ایڈیٹر سید علی صفوی سے ایک خصوصی مکالمے میں مولانا سید کلب جواد نقوی نے مسلمانان جہان سے متحد ہونے کی اپیل کرتے ہوئے کہا: اسلام دشمن قوتیں مسلمانوں کے درمیان تفرقہ ڈالنے کے لئے ہر قسم کا حربہ استعمال کررہی ہیں تاکہ مسلمان ایک دوسرے کے خون کے پیاسے ہو جایئں۔ آپ دیکھئے کبھی عراق پرحملہ ہورہا ہے، کبھی لبیا پر حملہ ہورہا ہے، کبھی شام پر حملہ ہورہا ہے، کبھی یمن پہ حملہ ہورہا ہے، بحرین میں تباہی مچائی جارہی ہے، ایران کو دھمکیاں دی جارہی ہیں ۔ مقصد یہی ہے کہ مسلمانوں میں انتشار پیدا ہو اور مسلمان کمزور ہوجائیں۔ جب کمزور ہوجائینگے تو ان کو ختم کرنے کے لئے ایک ہی حملہ کافی ہوگا۔

انہوں نے کہا: اسلام دشمن قوتوں نے مسلمانوں کے خلاف “Divide and Annihilate” یعنی لڑاؤ اور ختم کرو کا فارمولہ اپنایا ہے۔ افسوس کہ مسلمان ان کا ساتھ دے رہے ہیں۔ ہمارے یہاں جب بھی جلسہ ہوتا ہے تو امریکہ کو ھدف تنقید بنایا جاتا ہے لیکن جو ہمارے اپنے لوگ امریکہ کی مدد کر رہے ہیں ان کا نام لینے سے اعتراض کیا جاتا ہے۔ وہ یہ کہتے ہیں کہ امریکہ نے عراق میں تباہی مچائی مگر یہ نہیں کہتے کہ امریکہ کے ہوائی جہاز کہاں سے اُڑھے تھے، کن کن ملکوں نے اپنے ہوائی اڈے دئے، کن کن ملکوں نے اپنے ساحل دئے۔ جب مسلمانوں نے امریکہ کا ساتھ دیا تب امریکہ عراق پر حملہ کرنے میں کامیاب ہوا۔ ایک مرتبہ مولانا محمود مدنی صاحب نے میرے سامنے فرمایا کہ سعودی عرب میں امریکہ کی اتنی فوج موجود ہیں کہ صرف بارہ منٹ میں وہ پورے سعودی عرب پر قبضہ کرسکتی ہیں۔ جو بھی امریکہ کا حکم ہوتا ہے عرب ممالک اس کی تعمیل میں لگ جاتے ہیں۔ 

مولانا کلب جواد نے کہا کہ اس وقت مسلمانوں کی سب سے بڑی ضرورت یہ ہے کہ وہ سیسہ پلائی ہوئی دیوار کے مانند متحد ہوجائیں تاکہ دشمن ٹکرا ٹکرا کر واپس ہوجائے اور مسلمانوں کو نقصان نہ پہنچا سکے۔ یہ تبھی ممکن ہے جب سب مسلمان بلا لحاظ مذہب(مسلک) و فرقہ ایک پلیٹ فارم پر آئینگے اور متحد ہوکر اسلام دشمن قوتوں کی سازشوں کا مقابلہ کرینگے۔ 

لکھنو شھر کے امام جمعہ نے کہا کہ جو مسلمانوں کو آپس میں لڑوائے گا وہ مسلمانوں کا دشمن ہے اور جو اتحاد پیدا کرے وہی صحیح معنوں میں مسلمانوں کا دوست ہے۔ اگر یہ بات مسلمان سمجھیں تو میں سمجھتا ہوں کہ اس میں مسلمانوں کی امان ہے۔ 

مولانا سید کلب جواد نے اسلام میں اجتماعیت کی اہمیت کو بیان کرتے ہوئے کہا: اسلام میں اجتماعیت کی اہمیت غیر معمولی ہے۔ اسلام میں عبادت کا تصور باقی مذاہب سے برعکس ہے۔ ہر مذہب میں اسی عبادت کو زیادہ پسند کیا جاتا ہے جو تنہائی میں ہو مگر اسلام میں عبادت کا تصور یہ ہے کہ جتنا بڑا اجتماع ہوگا عبادت کرنے والے کو اتنا زیادہ ثواب ملے گا۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ اسلام میں نماز جماعت کی تاکید کئی گئی ہے۔ اب کوئی سوال کرے گا کہ عبادت تو انفرادی عمل ہے، اللہ اور بندے کے درمیان ربط کا نام ہے، تو پھر اجتماع کی کیا ضرورت ہے۔ دراصل مقصد یہ ہے کہ آپس میں محبت پیدا ہو، آپس میں اتحاد پیدا ہو، آپسی اختلافات دور ہوں۔ جب روزانہ پانچ وقت سب مسجد میں جمع ہونگے تو آپسی غلط فہمیاں دور ہونگی، آپسی اختلافات دور ہونگے۔ اسی طرح جب جمعہ کے موقع پر شہر کے لوگ جمع ہونگے تو شہر کے مسلمانوں میں آپس میں اتحاد پیدا ہوگا۔ جب عیدین کے موقع پر نماز عید کی تقریب میں آس پاس کے علاقوں کے لوگ آئینگے تو پھر اتحاد میں اور زیادہ اضافہ ہوگا۔ اسی طرح حج میں جب ساری دنیا کے مسلمان جمع ہونگے تو اتحاد کو اور زیادہ مستحکم بنانے کا موقع ملے گا۔ اجتماعیت کا جو بنیادی فلسفہ ہے وہ اتحاد اسلامی ہے۔ مقصد یہی ہے کہ آپس میں اختلافات دور ہوجائیں، دشمنوں کی سازشیں ناکام ہوں، فتنہ ناکام ہو اور مسلمان آپس میں متحد ہوجائیں۔ 

'Hajj is symbol of unity and proximity of Muslims worldwide'

Dr Karim Najafi, Deputy International, Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Islamic Republic of Iran, has said that Hajj is the symbol of unity and proximity of Muslims worldwide. He said irrespective of their ethnicity, race, color, linguistic and cultural diversity, and geographical location, Muslims from all walks of life assemble in Mecca to demonstrate their strength and cohesiveness.

In an exclusive interview with TNA editor, Syed Ali Safvi, on the sidelines of international Hajj conference in New Delhi, former Cultural Counsellor, Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi, and presently Deputy International, Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr Karim Najafi Barzegar, said that Hajj is the greatest manifestation of Muslim unity. 

“God invites Muslims, irrespective of creed or sect, to the place of peace and brotherhood. Hajj is the embodiment of unity and solidarity among Muslims,” he said. 

Stressing the need for unity among Muslims, Dr Najafi, who earned his doctoral degree at India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), said anti-Muslim forces have launched a vicious propaganda campaign against Islam and efforts are being made to divide Muslims on sectarian lines. 

“There is a greater need for unity among the Muslims. We must try to implement the unity message of Hajj in our lives and get united to foil the nefarious designs of enemies,” he said. 

Referring to the international Hajj conference, Dr Najafi, who had come from Iran to attend the conference, said that the organizers received 40 articles written by Indian and Iranian scholars on the importance of Hajj. 

“Most of the write-ups have underscored the importance of unity and proximity among Muslims, which, to me, is need of the hour,” he said. 

He said that last year the Iranian Cultural House had received Hajj messages from India’s top political personalities like Mr Salman Khurshid, Dr Farooq Abdullah, and Mrs Sheila Dixit. 

“All of them called for promotion of inter-religious harmony,” he said.
